When Leverage Meets Silicon: Coinbase’s New Perpetuals Cross a Dangerous Line

On July 16, the U.S.-based exchange will launch perpetual futures tied to two semiconductor ETFs: the Roundhill Memory ETF (MEMY) and a Direxion leveraged chip ETF. On the surface, this looks like another product expansion—a linear extension of Coinbase’s existing derivatives suite. But peel back the layers, and you’ll find a structural time bomb: leverage on top of leverage, layered on assets that were never designed for crypto’s funding rate whimsy.
Let’s rewind the context. Perpetual futures are the backbone of crypto trading—no expiry, settle via funding fees, and allow up to 100x leverage on some platforms. They’ve been a cash cow for Binance, Bybit, and Coinbase itself. But the underlying assets have always been native: BTC, ETH, SOL. Taking a traditional ETF—especially a leveraged one—and wrapping it in a perpetual is like handing a child a flamethrower. The Direxion ETF in question (likely SOXL or SOXS) already embeds 3x daily leverage on the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index. That means if the index drops 5% in a day, the ETF falls 15% due to compounding and reset mechanics. Now add a 5x or 10x perpetual on top of that. Your effective leverage becomes 15x to 30x against the index. One wrong move and your account is dust.

Now, the contrarian angle. Some will argue this is a natural step toward bridging traditional and crypto finance. Coinbase is a regulated entity; it has risk controls, position limits, and insurance. The product targets sophisticated traders who already understand the risks. But I’ve been around long enough to know that “sophisticated” is often a euphemism for “willing to take bigger risks with other people’s money.” The real blind spot? Regulatory jurisdiction. The SEC and CFTC have been fighting over who polices crypto derivatives. Offering perpetuals on an ETF—which is a security—could drag Coinbase into a turf war. The CFTC might claim it’s a commodity derivative; the SEC might see it as an unregistered security offering. Neither outcome benefits the retail traders who will be lured by the AI/ semiconductor narrative.
Truth be told, the narrative itself is the hook. Coinbase chose MEMY and Direxion precisely because they resonate with the AI chip boom. Every retail trader dreams of catching the next Nvidia. This product lets them trade the dream with 20x leverage. But the narrative will inevitably shift—when the sector corrects (and it will), the leverage will amplify losses and generate headlines. “Crypto exchange causes 90% losses in chip ETF” is a headline waiting to be written. The market’s job is to give you what you want; the exchange’s job is to give you what you need. Here, Coinbase is giving dopamine hits wrapped in smart contract output.
So where does this leave us? We’re about to witness a live experiment in cross-asset synthetic leverage. The product goes live in 10 days. My advice: before you click “open long,” pull up the ETF’s prospectus, calculate the decay, and then decide if you truly understand what you’re buying. Code doesn’t govern risk—governance does.
